Introducing the LEGO® ONE PIECE The Baratie Floating Restaurant set

Welcome to the Baratie Floating Restaurant! Your table is right this way; just watch out for deadly duels, skilled sous chefs and one-legged owners.

It can be a delicious and a dangerous place. So, to help you learn the ropes of this maritime eatery, we spoke to Isaac Snyder, the designer of the new LEGO® ONE PIECE The Baratie Floating Restaurant set, who will tell you everything you need to know.

Welcome to the world of ONE PIECE

Isaac is a big fan of the ONE PIECE live-action series and knew right away that the Baratie would make a great LEGO set.

“It’s a very memorable location!” Isaac replied, and – for those who might not know it – he offers a helpful visitors guide.

“It’s a sea-faring restaurant owned by Zeff, a former pirate captain who now works as head chef, with Sanji as the sous chef. Luffy, Nami, Usopp and Zoro stop for a meal at the Baratie, and several significant moments occur here: Luffy befriends Sanji and recruits him to join the Straw Hat Pirates; Zoro challenges his idol Mihawk to a duel; Vice Admiral Garp and Zeff remember the past days of piracy and realize it’s time for a new generation to rule the seas.”

Got it! Thanks, Isaac. So, how do you approach the design of an important location like this?

“It is an unusual mix of a building and a ship,” says Isaac. “So, getting the overall shape for the exterior was a challenge, particularly having a smooth integration of the iconic fish head bar. After capturing the facade, I used that to determine the size and layout of the interior and work on creating an efficient structure to hold everything together.”

Take a tour of the LEGO® ONE PIECE The Baratie Floating Restaurant set

Now that we know the background, it’s time to dive deeper into the set itself.

We asked Isaac for a brief guided tour, and he was happy to oblige.

“Inside the main entrance you find the central dining room with elegant flooring and fancy booths,” he says. “Adjacent to it are the kitchen and fish head bar. You can walk up one of the curving staircases to reach a floor with additional tables and Zeff’s private quarters, featuring an ornate desk and chair.  Another staircase leads to an external deck with sun chairs and a view of the East Blue. One last room is hidden above and houses some of Zeff’s treasures from his days as a pirate, and has ladders to a couple of small upper deck areas.”

And what about the details? We know that LEGO designers love to hide Easter eggs in their designs. Did Isaac manage to squeeze any hidden details into the Baratie?

“One of the stickers references Zeff’s past as Red-Leg Zeff, and Sanji’s Jolly Roger design is included on the staff entrance door,” he says. “There is also a Den Den Mushi (better known as a Transponder Snail) in Zeff’s office.”

Straw Hats, Marines and one-legged chefs

As appealing as ONE PIECE’s thrilling oceanic world is the quirky cast of characters that call it home.

Isaac and the team knew that in any ONE PIECE set, minifigures would be crucial (and lots of fun).

“You get a great selection of characters,” says Isaac. “Including some that don’t appear in other sets or have new decorations here. And the Baratie makes a great location for them all to interact with each other at, while also being an impressive display piece.”

We asked him for an introduction to a few of the 10 minifigures that come with the set.

“Luffy is there, wearing his iconic straw hat,” says Isaac. “Nami appears in her usual attire. Usopp features a new element for his bandana and hair. Zoro is wearing a black bandana, ready to fight Mihawk. Vice Admiral Garp wears his spotless white suit and red epaulettes. Sanji is ready for work in the kitchen with a dark blue apron. Zeff has his memorable forked beard and pegleg. Helmeppo has a double-sided head for some different expression options. Koby has his purple glasses and cadet uniform. And Mihawk includes a new sword element to portray his epic weapon, Yoru.”

Whether you’re a would-be Straw Hat Pirate looking for a great display or you’re searching for a gift for a ONE PIECE fan, the Baratie will be like finding your very own piece of treasure, only you won’t have to cross an ocean to find this one.
